The Difference of Carbon steel Surgical Blade and Stainless Steel Surgical Blade

October 12, 2022

According to the material, Yingmed supply two different Disposable Surgical Blade. One is Carbon Stainless steel, the other one is Stainless Steel.

What is the difference about these two kinds Surgical Blades ?

Generally speaking, carbon steel does not have special alloying elements added to it, and stainless steel is a steel with high alloy content added for rust prevention.

Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content Wc of less than 2.11%. Also called carbon steel. Carbon steel is the traditional material used to make machete blades. Carbon is added to iron to provide iron strength and increase the hardness of the alloy, but increasing the carbon content also makes the steel more brittle. Carbon steel has been around for over four thousand years. Generally speaking, carbon steel has the advantage of being harder than stainless steel and will remain sharper for longer. However, once regrinding is required, carbon steel is difficult to re-sharpen due to its strength. The main disadvantage of carbon steel is that it is prone to rust, so it must be kept away from moisture and maintained in a relatively dry environment.
Advantages: higher hardness than stainless steel. But less expensive than stainless steel, edge sharpening stays longer.
Cons: Blades tend to rust when in contact with moisture, must be oiled regularly; edges are difficult to re-sharpen.

Stainless steel, plus nickel and chromium, is generally more expensive than carbon steel. Nickel and chromium additives are oxidized to form a protective coating on carbon steel to inhibit rust. The rust resistance of stainless steel keeps the blade in shape for a long time and is easy to maintain. Stainless steel tends to be softer than carbon steel and lose its sharpness more quickly. That said, it can be reground more easily than high carbon steel. However, with the advancement of modern technology, many manufacturers have begun to improve the shortcomings of stainless steel, coating the stainless steel edge with platinum to make the blade edge more durable and sharp.
Advantages: Corrosion resistant, easier to maintain than carbon steel, easy to re-sharpen edges.
Disadvantages: The hardness is not as high as that of carbon steel, the edges are easily passivated, and the price is more expensive than carbon steel
